Question by d_curious_cat: Why is everybody ignoring the fact that the some of the cheapest netbooks can function better than the iPad?
Wouldnt it have been simpler to just pitch it against an ebook reader like kindle or nook, both of which the iPad will DEFINITELY outperform, instead choosing to compete it with netbooks and becoming the laughing stock of most the tech community (with the exception of the MacBoys Ofcourse), thus leading to comparisons like this?

Apple’s products are always big. And people are too lazy to do research, so when Apple releases this new iPad people automatically think it will be great just like the iPod, and don’t care if another product is better; they just want it because everyone else might eventually have it.

Question by Ariba: The amazon kindle vs. Barnes and Noble’s nook. Which is better?
Which is better??? Can you give me info about both please??? thnx.

From the official page of B&N, here is how the Nook compares with the Kindle:
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/nook/compare/
Since Barnes and Noble page is only mentioning the advantage of the Nook over the Kindle, let me try to tell more about the benefit of the Kindle 2 over the Nook:
- There is no internet browser for the Nook. So even with Wi-Fi, you can only use it to purchase book. You cannot do searching in Google, Wikipedia, check email, etc., like what you can do with the Kindle.
- The Amazon Kindle has international free 3G wireless which covers over 100 countries. So even if you’re in places like the UK or Australia, you can access the internet with the Kindle free of charge. The Nook has wireless only within the U.S., and is limited for use of buying books only
- The Kindle is available outside the U.S. (it ships to 176 countries), while the Nook only ship within the U.S. at this moment.
- The Kindle has text-to-speech function, so it can treat an ebook like audio book. This function is not present on the Nook.
- Amazon is already doing some change after the Nook is announced (still more than one month for it to be available). They dropped the price of their International Kindle even further. And they are going to release a PC software which can read their Kindle books.
One more thing to be aware is that, at first glance you may think the Nook can read ebooks with color touch screen. But indeed the color touch screen is only a small screen beneath the greyscale eink screen, and seems it is only used to browse the cover of ebooks.
In my opinion, it is a tie between the Kindle and the Barnes and Noble. But if you may travel and you enjoy reading during your trip, you should go for the Kindle for sure. Moreover, I trust the Kindle will come up with some strategies very soon, like improving their lending book function. The Kindle is the biggest player in the ereader market right now, and I believe it will put enormous effort to hold its position.
I recommend this article as well, it is the best review on ebook readers I’ve ever read:

Hope this helps you decide.

why someone would spend money for an electronic device to read books and then pay 10 bucks for all the books is beyond me.

Question by Shalyn: What is better? Nook vs. Kindle?
Which one is better, and why? Also, what is the difference between buying the Nook WiFi and the Nook WiFi+3G?
Best answer:
Answer by Natural
For reading purpose, you should definitely choose ebook readers like the Kindle or the Nook instead of iPad. The backlight screen of iPad is harmful to eyes when reading on it too long.
For the Nook, the only difference between the two versions is that the Nook 3G can purchase and download ebooks through wireless when it is either in area with Wifi hotspot, or in coverage of AT&T 3G network. The Nook Wifi can only download ebooks through wireless when it is in Wifi hotspot area. You can judge whether it is worth the extra 50 dollars for your case.
One point to note is that unlike the Amazon Kindle, the 3G on the Nook cannot be used to browse the internet. This is a strength of the Amazon Kindle, that it comes with free 3G wireless that can be used for browsing the internet, while the Nook can only browse the internet when it is in Wifi hotspot area.
I’ve given a detailed comparison between the Nook and the Kindle previously, in another answer here. Guess it’ll help you decide which one to choose:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100425013316AAA7BML
And recently, Amazon has announced an upgrade to its Kindle, to secure their market shares. See here for the update details:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fhelp%2Fcustomer%2Fdisplay.html%3Fie%3DUTF8%26nodeId%3D200324680%26ref_%3Dhp%5Fnavbox%5Fkrec%5Fsu&tag=ereader-2-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957
And it is a myth that the Kindle can only get books from Amazon. Actually the Kindle supports quite a variety of formats as well, including very common open formats like PDF, MS Word, etc. So you can get books from other websites selling books in those formats as well. See “Files Kindle Recognizes” section here on what file format the Kindle can support:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fhelp%2Fcustomer%2Fdisplay.html%3Fie%3DUTF8%26nodeId%3D200375630%26ref_%3Dhp%5Fk2land%5Ftrans%5Fdownload&tag=ereader-2-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

The Nook’s color screen is only for reading book cover, not actual book content. The small color screen is a minor plus, not a must in my opinion…

Question by Roy: New Kindle 3 vs Barnes & Noble Nook, which one is better?
I’m new to Yahoo Answers, but as I’m doing my search I found there are plenty of information on the Kindle and the Nook given by some people here. I’ve been thinking to get an ebook reader, and I just learned that Amazon has released their new version of Kindle. It has been a hard time for me to decide whether to choose the Kindle or the Nook. So now there’s a new Kindle, is the Kindle better than the Nook?
Best answer:
Answer by Maxim
I get to say the latest improvement of Kindle 3 really makes it stands out from other competitors like B&N Nook or Sony Reader. It has a new better eInk screen (of 50% better contrast), triple of battery life, double of memory, lighter weight, faster page turn, and better PDF support (with notes, highlight, dictionary, zoom, and access to password-protect PDF), as compared with the Nook. And the Kindle 3 now also supports WiFi, which is used to be limitation of the Kindle 2.
There are some new features of the Kindle 3 worth to mention. These include accessibility for low vision or blind readers, via text-to-speech function for homepage and menus. It now also supports CJK fonts, which means the Kindle can now display Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian characters, etc. These cannot be found in any other ebook readers.
I myself own the Kindle 2. I chose the Kindle 2 instead of the Nook or Sony Reader at that time, because it has the text-to-speech function which means I can “read” books with my hands and eyes free to do other things. I use this function often when I’m on public transport, doing housework, etc. I think it is really a cool feature that cannot be missed.
And if you get the Kindle 3G version, it has web browsing function over both wireless network and WiFi (while the Nook only has web browsing over WiFi, i.e. only when you are around WiFi hotspot, which is the same as the Kindle WiFi only version; the Sony Reader doesn’t even have a web browser). The free internet plus the web browser allow me to look for information whenever I’m in need. And it is free inside the U.S. and many other countries, it is just incredible when you bring it to trip.
And indeed, the Kindle has more available books, and some ebooks are a bit cheaper on the Kindle as well. Barnes and Nobles always count in the one million free books from Google, which can also be read on the Kindle. For Sony, many users complain it is difficult to find books for it.
Here are the millions of free books available to the Kindle, and all Kindle books in latest bestselling order, that you can check from time to time:

http://www.amazon.com/b?node=1286228011&tag=elec-m-20
And I remember I read this review when I decided to get my Kindle:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR2DUM7S4XW06QN%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ASIN%3DB00154JDAI%26nodeID%3D%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Fpr%255Fcmt&tag=elec-m-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957
Finally, there is also the new Kindle DX Graphite which is available now. You can read this article to decide whether to choose the new Kindle or the new Kindle DX:

Hope it helps

Question by big Mac: Nook vs Kindle, what’s better? Looking to switch from Nook?
I just bought a nook this past week and honestly I feel I have been swindled. B & N customer service is useless (almost AT&T-esque) and the old releases are overpriced ( vs in store, wtf?!).
What I’m looking to prevent is another unsatisfactory experience. I like the concept, I just need to know which company has it better.

Books on the Nook are more expensive than that on the Kindle in general. There are some very good actual user opinions here about the Nook and the Kindle, you should be able to make your decision after reading:

Neither.
You’d be best off waiting for the next generation which will be cheaper and open sourced.
