Question by pinky: Kindle vs. Nook (or other brand) — Which book reader is best and why?
I’d like to have purchase one to use as I commute from home to work everyday. I take public transportation, sometimes underground and other times above ground and in the sun. I don’t like carrying books, so I thought I might invest in an e-book reader.
I want to know which brand/model that you have tried is best, in your opinion, and why. Also, what problems, if any, have you encountered with the device?

I think kindle is great source to use! You can buy books and read them online xD what you’ve chosen is good so far.

Kindle by far! It is so simple, and it has FREE 3G
That means you can get on the internet from anywhere to download a book in seconds! I have the oldest version, but it works wonderfully and will last a long time!
The nook: I saw it when I went to barns & noble. It was a little dysfunctional. And like I said, I have a Kindle, and its works great and easy to use. The least expensive one is $189.
i’ve had both the kindle and the nook…and i like the nook way better. i had my kindle for about a year and it broke so i bought the nook. like the kindle, the nook also has free att 3G. the charge lasts a lot longer on the nook. the nook has a touch screen to do all your navigating, and the kindle has a keyboard…i like the touchscreen better. you can add your mp3s to the device if you like. it also has sudoku and chess on there. barnes and noble offers a lot of free and cheap books all the time…and every friday if you go to the barnes and noble store you can get relatively new ebooks for free. i think the nook is a little faster then the kindle too. and my kindle would freeze every once in a while, but i havnt had that trouble with the nook. i havnt had any problems with my nook actually…ive had it since early march. i guess the main reasons why i like it more is that it has a color touchscreen to navigate, it charges faster and the charge lasts longer, and that it operates better. you can get it either with just wifi or wifi with free att 3G ($149 and $199). i also like the layout of barnes and nobles website better then amazons when it comes to searching for books. at the moment there are more kindle fans out there, but from what i see a lot of it is bc the kindle has been out longer, the nook is still relatively new so not as many people have them. but ya, speaking as someone who has had both, i like the NOOK.
I’ve given a detailed comparison between the Nook and the Kindle previously, in another answer here. Guess it’ll help you decide which one to choose:

And recently, Amazon has announced an upgrade to its Kindle, to secure their market shares. See here for the update details:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fhelp%2Fcustomer%2Fdisplay.html%3Fie%3DUTF8%26nodeId%3D200324680%26ref_%3Dhp%5Fnavbox%5Fkrec%5Fsu&tag=ereader-2-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957
And it is a myth that the Kindle can only get books from Amazon. Actually the Kindle supports quite a variety of formats as well, including very common open formats like PDF, MS Word, etc. So you can get books from other websites selling books in those formats as well. See “Files Kindle Recognizes” section here on what file format the Kindle can support:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fhelp%2Fcustomer%2Fdisplay.html%3Fie%3DUTF8%26nodeId%3D200375630%26ref_%3Dhp%5Fk2land%5Ftrans%5Fdownload&tag=ereader-2-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957
I think i’m going to get the Nook. It’s more attractive and there is more books to choose from. Who cares if you can’t read in austarailia!
i dont kow i prefer books to those things
what ever one you get i dont know what kind of books you like but i would recommend some books that i liked alot and others liked when i told them about them
I own the Kindle. If you ask me to choose again now, I’ll still go for the Kindle instead of the Nook, because it has the text-to-speech function which means I can “read” books with my hands and eyes free to do other things. I use this function often when I’m on public transport, doing housework, etc. It is really a cool feature that cannot be missed.
The web browsing function over wireless network on the Kindle (while the Nook only has web browsing over WiFi, i.e. only when you are around WiFi hotspot; the Sony Reader doesn’t even have a web browser) is rather important as well. The free internet (and now it is free international internet) plus the web browser allow me to look for information whenever I’m in need. And right now it is free for both the U.S. and many other countries, it is just incredible when you bring it to trip (note that you cannot get ebooks for the Nook when you’re outside the U.S., but you can get books on the Kindle outside U.S.)
And indeed, the Kindle has more available books, and ebooks are cheaper on the Kindle as well (Barnes and Nobles always count in the one million free books from Google, which can also be read on the Kindle. For Sony, many users complain it is difficult to find books for it).
And I remember I read these reviews when I decided to get my Kindle:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR2DUM7S4XW06QN%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ASIN%3DB00154JDAI%26nodeID%3D%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Fpr%255Fcmt&tag=elec-m-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957
And below are the millions of free books and full list of bestselling books for the Kindle, that you can check from time to time:

And Amazon just released a new Kindle DX Graphite with 50% better contrast and further price slash. You can read this article to decide whether to choose the original Kindle or the new Kindle DX:

Hope it helps
It is always the best to read some actual user opinions.
There are some very good actual user opinions here, for someone who has tried the Nook and the Kindle, you should get a much better idea after reading:

One thing I want to mention is that for the lend me function on the Nook, you can lend each of your book once and only once, and only up to 14 days. If you’ve lent a book once to someone, you can no longer lend the book to anyone else thereafter. And 70% of copyrighted books cannot be lent out on the Nook as well, this is limitation posted by their publishers.
Hope these help you decide.
Kindle is sure a worth buying. Wireless is a unique feature I will say and that’s make really value for money. 3G wireless and global coverage, I personally travel a lot and really worthy for me. You can have any newspaper at any place and also they are cheaper. The best selling value for the Kindle is convenience for the travel, it’s pretty handy and easy to carry anywhere with you. The other important thing matters to me are speedy for downloading books and reading material. Also it allow around average size of 1500 books and reading material to store, so is a significant amount of storage space to bring with you. In one line I can say “you are carrying your book shelf with you”.
Also one of the other feature of Kindle is it’s E-INK screen technology that don’t glare in any light so no strain to eyes and you can read for hours.
Also you save a lot in compare to the actual books, the books on kindle are really cheaper so I have saved a lot till now. Also there are plenty of books on kindle to choose. Also it has so good features such as Text-To-Speech which is really useful when you get bored or doing some other activity.
Amazon Kindle

I say the Kindle.
I love my Kindle 2 very much. If you’re thinking about getting the Kindle, I’ll say get it and you won’t regret. Right now I’ve read over 10 books with the Kindle, and I really like the idea that I can bring and store all the books with the handy device. Besides, it uses the e-ink technology, it is really clear like reading books; and even I read with the device for long hours, I don’t feel tired. The internet browsing comes handy as well when I want to look for information on some specific area. My only complaint is the white case, right now all the Kindles are in white color… I think it will be cool if I can have a black or deep blue color Kindle
Kindle books are cheaper than hard copies. I suggest you to read this review from a top reviewer who is also a book lover, it outlines quite a lot of benefits of the Kindle and also why it is worth especially at the end of the review:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR9J54TZ1541OR%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Frdp%255Fperm&tag=more_info-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957
And there are some websites, where you can find more than a million of free books for the Kindle, so that’s why you no longer need to get to library, you can actually own these books:

If you need to read PDF with charts and graphics, you may want to go for the Kindle DX (the new Kindle DX Graphite version is now at cheaper price and with better contrast). Read this review and you should be able to decide which one to get:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR23V08M2LNB81I%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ASIN%3DB0015TCML0%26nodeID%3D%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Fpr%255Fcmt&tag=more_info-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957
Hope this helps.
Among the ebook readers, the Amazon Kindle is the best I’ll say. I recommend this article, it mentioned Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Nobles, and other ebook readers by the end of the review:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR2V54YX2DD18S2%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Frdp%255Fperm&tag=searchresult-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957
There are huge selection of free books for the Kindle as well, as you can find here:

Finally, Amazon just released a new Kindle DX with 50% better contrast and further price cut. I put the link below for you to check out yourself.
Guess it’ll help you decide.
