I've look into comparison between the Kindle vs Nook as well. From the official page of B&N, here is how the Nook compares with the Kindle:

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/nook/compare/

Since Barnes and Noble page is only mentioning the advantage of the Nook over the Kindle, let me try to tell more about the benefit of the Kindle 2 over the Nook:

- There is no internet browser for the Nook. So even with Wi-Fi, you can only use it to purchase book. You cannot do searching in Google, Wikipedia, check email, etc., like what you can do with the Kindle.

- The Amazon Kindle has international free 3G wireless which covers over 100 countries. So even if you're in places like the UK or Australia, you can access the internet with the Kindle free of charge. The Nook has wireless only within the U.S., and is limited for use of buying books only

- The Kindle is available outside the U.S. (it ships to 176 countries), while the Nook only ship within the U.S. at this moment.

- The Kindle has text-to-speech function, so it can treat an ebook like audio book. This function is not present on the Nook.

- Amazon is already doing some change after the Nook is announced (still more than one month for it to be available). They dropped the price of their International Kindle even further. And they are going to release a PC software which can read their Kindle books.

Finally, one thing to be aware is that, at first glance you may think the Nook can read ebooks with color touch screen. But indeed the color touch screen is only a small screen beneath the greyscale eink screen, and seems it is only used to browse the cover of ebooks.

In my opinion, it is a tie between the Kindle and the Barnes and Noble. But since you travel every summer, you should go for the Kindle for sure for the free internet access outside the United States. Moreover, I trust the Kindle will come up with some strategies very soon, like improving their lending book function. The Kindle is the biggest player in the ereader market right now, and I believe it will put enormous effort to hold its position.

I do think ebook readers like the Nook or the Kindle is really convenient. I guess we'll go for less and less paper books, and more and more electronic books eventually. It is just a matter of time. I recommend this article as well, it is the best review on ebook readers I've ever read, from a person who has tried a number of ebook readers:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR3QM7LGL62MZ4X%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Frdp%255Fperm&tag=ereader-2-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

Hope this information helps.

The Kindle has cheaper price on books.

I love my Kindle 2 very much. If you're thinking about getting the Kindle, I'll say get it and you won't regret. Right now I've read over 10 books with the Kindle, and I really like the idea that I can bring and store all the books with the handy device. Besides, it uses the e-ink technology, it is really clear like reading books; and even I read with the device for long hours, I don't feel tired. The internet browsing comes handy as well when I want to look for information on some specific area. My only complaint is the white case, right now all the Kindles are in white color... I think it will be cool if I can have a black or deep blue color Kindle ;)

Kindle books are cheaper than hard copies. I suggest you to read this review from a top reviewer who is also a book lover, it outlines quite a lot of benefits of the Kindle and also why it is worth especially at the end of the review:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR9J54TZ1541OR%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Frdp%255Fperm&tag=more_info-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

And there are some websites, where you can find more than a million of free books for the Kindle, so that's why you no longer need to get to library, you can actually own these books:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/b/?node=2245146011&tag=more_info-20

If you need to read PDF with charts and graphics, you may want to go for the Kindle DX (the new Kindle DX Graphite version is now at cheaper price and with better contrast). Read this review and you should be able to decide which one to get:

Books on the Kindle are still a bit cheaper in general. And it is always the best to read some actual user opinions.

There are some very good actual user opinions here, for someone who has tried the Nook and the Kindle, you should get a much better idea after reading. It is true that the Nook still has some defects after updates:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR3KQMNG5BHQFXR%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref_%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Frdp%255Fperm&tag=querystr-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR1YO7GM00DSUVQ%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref_%3Dcm%5Fcr%5Frdp%5Fperm&tag=querystr-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

One thing I want to mention is that for the lend me function on the Nook, you can lend each of your book once and only once, and only up to 14 days. If you've lent a book once to someone, you can no longer lend the book to anyone else thereafter.

Hope these help you decide.

Not sure why there are so many Amazon employees on here but I would say that the prices are comparable to the point where this should not be a factor in the decision on which ereader to buy. For instance:

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: Amazon $7.15 BN $7.15
The Girl who played with Fire: Amazon $7.99 BN $7.99
The Kite Runner: Amazon $12.99 BN $12.99
New Moon: Amazon $14.99 BN $14.99
The Two Towers: Amazon $9.99 BN $9.99

Also, to clear up the Amazon employees errors - the nook (wifi) is cheaper than the kindle 2 (3g) by $20 and the Nook with Wifi AND 3g is only $10 more (seems like a better bargain to me). Also, when thinking about what is cheaper you can use the Nook to check out ebooks from the public library which you cannot do on the Kindle. Nor can you share books on the Kindle like you can on the Nook. FURTHER, if you were going to spend almost $400 on a Kindle DX you might consider the plethora of other very nice and better value ereaders such as BeBook, Egriver touch or Hanlin.

I don't think the text to speech is selling point for most yet since it's a robotic voice like your GPS device - you're better off getting an audiobook.

We just bought a Sony Reader Touch because we make lots of notes in books and has more capabilities in that area than the other readers at that price point.

I own the Kindle. If you ask me to choose again now, I'll still go for the Kindle instead of the Nook, because it has the text-to-speech function which means I can "read" books with my hands and eyes free to do other things. I use this function often when I'm on public transport, doing housework, etc. It is really a cool feature that cannot be missed.

The web browsing function over wireless network on the Kindle (while the Nook only has web browsing over WiFi, i.e. only when you are around WiFi hotspot) is rather important as well. The free internet (and now it is free international internet) plus the web browser allow me to look for information whenever I'm in need. And right now it is free for both the U.S. and many other countries, it is just incredible when you bring it to trip.

And indeed, the Kindle has more available books, and ebooks are cheaper on the Kindle as well (Barnes and Nobles always count in the one million free books from Google, which can also be read on the Kindle. For Sony, many users complain it is difficult to find books for it).

And I remember I read these reviews when I decided to get my Kindle:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR2DUM7S4XW06QN%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ASIN%3DB00154JDAI%26nodeID%3D%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Fpr%255Fcmt&tag=elec-m-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

And below are the millions of free books and full list of bestselling books for the Kindle, that you can check from time to time:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/b/?node=2245146011&tag=elec-m-20

http://www.amazon.com/b?node=1286228011&tag=elec-m-20

Finally, in case you don't know, Amazon just put a big price slash on the Kindle, and it is now a good time to get it. I put the link below for you to check it out yourself.

Hope it helps :)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR2DUM7S4XW06QN%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ASIN%3DB00154JDAI%26nodeID%3D%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Fpr%255Fcmt&tag=elec-m-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

And below are the millions of free books and full list of bestselling books for the Kindle, that you can check from time to time:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/b/?node=2245146011&tag=elec-m-20

Finally, in case you don’t know, Amazon just put a big price slash on the Kindle, and it is now a good time to get it. I put the link below for you to check it out yourself.

Hope it helps

Yes, Kindle books are cheaper than the books on the Nook.

I've given a detailed comparison between the Nook and the Kindle previously, in another answer here. Guess it'll help you decide which one to choose:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100425013316AAA7BML

And recently, Amazon has announced an upgrade to its Kindle, to secure their market shares. See here for the update details:

No the books on the Kindle are not cheaper than the Nook. All of the new books are the same price if you price check the list of best sellers between amazon and b&n they are exactly the same. Nook will give you more value for your money because a. you can borrow ebooks fromt the elibrary and sideload them onto your nook via the usb connection(can't do that with a kindle). b&n has great more in store deals if your near a b&n they offer free books all the time(not just the public domain ones that you can get anywhere) they offer a great deal on new releases. I have purchased them for $0.99 and have preordered a new release for free(the book not just preorder for those smartypants out there). You can also borrow books from anyone with a nook. As long as the book supports the lend me feature.

Kindle is definitely an amazing device. Its worth the money. You can put ebooks/notes/audio books on your kindle also Notes and annotations are very easy to make.Very easy to use with the PC and the Mac Kindle is very straight forward there's no need for additional software required for Kindle. Also supports you can also increase the text size which is again amazing.E-INK screen technology that don’t glare in any light so no strain to eyes and less harmful. There are wide range of books on kindle many are free and other are cheaper at price than the actual books so yes I have saved a lot of money till now.
You dont have to carry now all those heavy actual books, kindle is so light weight which is carrying almost 1500 books within it. Since I travel a lot I really like the 3G Internet you can get the internet wherever you go. Whenever you are tired of reading you can also you Text-To-Speech with auto-page turning feature which is jst so relaxing. If the small size strains your eyes a lot than can also change the text-size. I must say Kindle is a small magic books really I cant live without it.

Books on Kindle are cheaper than on Nook.Kindle is sure a worth buying. Wireless is a unique feature I will say and that's make really value for money. 3G wireless and global coverage, I personally travel a lot and really worthy for me. You can have any newspaper at any place and also they are cheaper. The best selling value for the Kindle is convenience for the travel, it’s pretty handy and easy to carry anywhere with you. The other important thing matters to me are speedy for downloading books and reading material. Also it allow around average size of 1500 books and reading material to store, so is a significant amount of storage space to bring with you. In one line I can say “you are carrying your book shelf with you”.
Also one of the other feature of Kindle is it’s E-INK screen technology that don’t glare in any light so no strain to eyes and you can read for hours.

Also you save a lot in compare to the actual books, the books on kindle are really cheaper so I have saved a lot till now. Also there are plenty of books on kindle to choose. Also it has so good features such as Text-To-Speech which is really useful when you get bored or doing some other activity.

It is true that the Kindle has cheaper books compared to the Nook. And the Kindle store is developed for over two years, so it is more mature compared to the ebook store of Barnes & Noble.

Among the ebook readers, the Amazon Kindle is the best I'll say. I recommend this article, it mentioned Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Nobles, and other ebook readers by the end of the review:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR2V54YX2DD18S2%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Frdp%255Fperm&tag=searchresult-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

There are huge selection of free books for the Kindle as well, as you can find here:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/b/?node=2245146011&tag=searchresult-20

Finally, Amazon just released a new Kindle DX with 50% better contrast and further price cut. I put the link below for you to check out yourself.

Guess it'll help you decide.

The Kindle. I suggest you to read this review from a top reviewer who is also a book lover, it outlines quite a lot of benefits of the Kindle and also why it is worth especially at the end of the review:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR2DUM7S4XW06QN%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ASIN%3DB00154JDAI%26nodeID%3D%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Fpr%255Fcmt&tag=more_info-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

And there are some websites like these two, where you can find more than ten thousand free books for the Kindle:

http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page

http://manybooks.net/

Hope this helps.

I own the Kindle. If you ask me to choose again now, I'll still go for the Kindle instead of the Nook, because I think the web browsing function over wireless network (while the Nook only has web browsing over WiFi, i.e. only when you are around WiFi hotspot) is rather important. The free internet (and now it is free international internet) plus the web browser allow me to look for information whenever I'm in need. It is really a cool feature that cannot be missed.

Finally, there may be good offers for the ebook readers from Amazon's site. Let me put the links below for you to check from time to time.

Hope it helps :)

Kindle 2 : First Impressions from a Kindle 1 owner
On the one hand I love my Kindle 1... I use it everyday, I subscribe to my favorite newspaper, I mark up my books with annotations, highlights and bookmarks.
On the other hand my Kindle 1 annoys me... unintended page changes, the awkward way I sometimes have to hold it to keep from hitting buttons, the sometimes slow page refresh, and the screen freezes that now has me traveling with a paper clip lest I need to do a reset while commuting on the train.
I've had the Kindle 2 in my hands for almost a day and have carried it on one commute. What follows is my "first impressions" review of the Kindle 2 from the perspective of an owner of the original K1. What's different, what's better and what's worse?
5 big things I immediately noticed as different:
First, when taking the K2 out of the box I immediately noted that the back cover is not easily removable (if at all) and won't slip off in my hands - as was frequent with the K1. The keyboard is also much much smaller and less obtrusive.
The second thing I noticed is power management. No longer do I have to press and hold two buttons to put the device to sleep. The switches for On/Off and Wireless On/Off are gone. There's a single small switch at the top of the K2 that handles Sleep.
The third thing I noticed - where's the silver strip? In fact, the entire navigation structure has been completely revised - I'm still getting used to it but it's a huge step forward. The silver strip has been replaced by a 4-way rocker that can also be pressed for "OK" commands, creating bookmarks, and doing highlighting.
The fourth thing I noticed - while page changing doesn't seem to me to be particularly faster - almost every other interaction on the screen is vastly accelerated... scrolling the cursor, looking up words, highlighting text, and typing text.
The fifth thing I noticed - a new power cable. This unit uses USB cables that are not compatible with K1. It's a bit of a bummer since I was hoping my wife and I could share power cables (she's taking over my K1).
What's better:
Navigation is a huge improvement. Moving the cursor to a word and having the definition of the word immediately pop up on the bottom of the screen is terrific. Using the rocker to move between articles in a newspaper makes scanning the paper much faster and enjoyable. Calling up the Menu strip is much faster and interactive. Clearly, Amazon was hard at work to make navigation quicker and easier. The hard work is apparent.
Buttons: The K1 was a constant struggle with inadvertent page changes. The design was flawed from the beginning. The single best improvement in the K2 took a few minutes of concentrated reading to realize... the button hinges are on the outside - at the edge - of the K2. You need to press on the interior of the button to get it to click. This change alone has saved me from several inadvertent page changes. Combine that with the smaller button sizes and one major source of frustration has been instantly eliminated!
